Gaby Beston Edwards is a Venezuelan-born, Trinidadian-national artist. Her work begins from an unshakable pull to witness the life of the natural world. Large-scale canvases of colour-drenched Nature act as narrator to her visual memory. She interprets her personal and ancestral stories of plants and the messages they carry through shifting layers of shadow and light, jewel-toned acrylic washes, and pastel markings that build over time. Plants are a language passed on to her from her mother - once a cultivator of a wild garden in her childhood home. They are now the keeper of her mother’s memory.

In fluid rivers of pigment that spill over into the fringes of her paintings, Gaby pours out story and emotion onto the canvas and wields temporal influence over its shape and form, before the paint determines its own place. Her work captures poignant moments of her observations of Nature - moments of intense presence that are replayed in flashes of colour, sometimes saturated and urgent, other times watery and transient, fading then reappearing just as her memories do. Each canvas is in recognition of the generations that have communed with Nature before her; those that have left their imprint of hope in the landscape.

She returns to the mistress of her memory - her mother, her closely kept teachings, her wild garden- as a resource. Colour is how she keeps her memory alive and writes it into the DNA of her lived experience.

In constant search for an underground root that connects her life to an ancestral past, Gaby finds a place to belong in her coexistence with Nature - the witness to generations of love and grief that now gracefully holds her memories for generations to come.
